You Become What You Repeat

Somewhere between the gap and the gain.

Welcome back to Mind by Fire — Today I want to talk about habits. I read the book Atomic Habits, a few times actually. I had a routine, not necessarily habits, at least not productive ones. We are all prone to saying we are starting a new routine. Whether that is to work out and eat better or going to bed earlier.

This is where most struggle when forming a new habit. Saying it is only the first step before we decide to take action. At first the motivation is there because we are excited about the idea of becoming someone different. We picture the results before we have built the discipline behind them. Then resistance starts showing up once the routine becomes inconvenient or uncomfortable.

That is where most people quit. To reinforce your habit, build a system around the actions and routines that support a successful day. With a system, you create a new identity of being the person who does the thing you said you would do.

I think where a lot of people struggle is expecting the routine to change them faster than it realistically can. We start measuring ourselves against the version of us we thought we would already be by now.

Missing one workout does not suddenly erase your progress. Going to bed late one night does not undo the routine you are trying to build.

The brain adapts to what we repeatedly do. Over time the routine starts feeling more natural because the brain is adjusting to the behavior we continue reinforcing. That is part of neuroplasticity. The opposite is true too. If we keep putting things off or falling back into inconsistency, that can start feeling normal too.

That is why keeping promises to yourself matters. You are not just building routines. You are reinforcing the identity of someone who follows through.

Consistency alone does not always mean progress. We can become disciplined at routines that no longer align with the life we are trying to build. You can follow the same patterns every day and still feel stuck if the habits behind them are disconnected from your actual goals.

It helps to step back and ask what your routines are reinforcing. Are they helping you move forward, or are they simply helping you stay comfortable?

Maybe the goal is not to completely change who you are overnight. Maybe it is becoming more intentional about the habits and routines shaping your life over time.
