Where Does the Time Go
The hidden cost of saying yes when you wanted to say no.
Welcome back to Mind by Fire — Have you ever stopped to wonder where the time goes?
You can probably tell me about a vacation you took ten years ago. Where you ate. Who you were with. Something that made you laugh.
Now try remembering a Tuesday from three weeks ago.
Not much comes to mind.
Your brain doesn't record every day the same way. The hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for forming new memories, pays closer attention to things that are new, emotional, unexpected, or meaningful. Everything else gets compressed.
That's one reason a week on vacation can feel bigger in your memory than an entire month at home.
Maybe time isn't moving any faster.
Maybe our brains are just remembering less of it.
If we can't slow time down, maybe the better question is how we spend the time we already have.
That's what time wealth has come to mean to me.
It starts with protecting your calendar. Learning to say no to the things that don't deserve a yes. Not because you're selfish, but because every unnecessary commitment costs you time you'll never get back. Unlike money, once time has been spent, you don't get the chance to earn it back.
I find myself wanting to move through the day faster just to get to something I'm looking forward to or somewhere I want to be.
Even then, time seems to speed by.
We may not be able to control the speed of time.
But we do have a say in how we spend it.
