If You Already Know... Why Haven’t You Done It?

Thinking isn’t knowing. And knowing means nothing without action.

Welcome back to Mind by Fire — When it comes to money… what are you not doing that you already know you should?

You know what to do.
You’ve thought about it before.
But thinking isn’t knowing, and knowing means nothing without action.

You see it every year. Before your tax refund even hits your account, it’s already spent.

One Brain-Based Insight:

Tax season is here, and the deadline is approaching.

Some of you are still waiting on your refund.
Some of you already received it and spent it just as fast as it came in.

That’s not just tax season. That’s how most people make everyday money decisions.

This may not apply to everyone, but for many, it does.

Your brain doesn’t just make a decision it backs it up.

The moment you expect money, you start leaning in a direction:
I’ll use it for this
I’ve been needing that
I deserve it

And once that thought is there, your brain goes to work.

It starts building the case:
why it makes sense
why it’s justified
why now is the right time

And if there’s any stress around money, whether it’s pressure, lack, or just wanting relief, it only speeds it up.

Because under stress, your brain isn’t focused on long-term decisions.

It’s focused on relief.

So by the time the money actually hits your account, you’re not deciding—you’re following through on something you already wanted to do, backed by a story that made it feel right.

And it’s worth asking…

Did you wait all year to receive that refund… just to hand it right off to someone else?

Reset Ritual

Pre-commit the money. If you already know what you should do with your refund, don’t wait until it hits your account to decide, decide now, and take it one step further: if you need to pay something down, schedule the payment for the day the refund hits; if you’re saving it, move it to a separate account you don’t touch; if you’re investing, set the transfer in advance.

If you don’t have an emergency fund, this is a good time to start building one. And if there’s something you want to buy, pause—give it time before you spend it.

Because once the money is sitting in your account, your brain will start negotiating, and most of those negotiations don’t move you forward. So remove the decision in the moment—make it ahead of time and let it execute.

Reflection

Every day is a series of decisions.

Some are small.
Some matter more than we treat them.

We hear the advice.
We know what we should be doing.

It makes sense.
It sounds right.

And then nothing changes.

Not because we don’t understand, but because comfort keeps us in place.

It’s easier to stay where we are than to act on what we already know.

So we keep gathering more information.
More ideas.
More ways to do it better.

Maybe that’s your sign to keep going.

But don’t forget…

Knowledge isn’t power. Applied knowledge is.
